Mel Aaronson, First Vice President of NCPERS, is the Treasurer of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), Local 2, American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The UFT is the largest labor union local in the United States. Mr. Aaronson has been a trustee and member of the board of the Teachers' Retirement System of New York City since 1980. He has served for over 27 years as a Pension Consultant for the UFT. He is also Chairman of the Pension Committee and Coordinator of the "Ready-or-Not" pre-retirement preparation program. Additionally, he has served as Special Representative for the Retired Teachers' Chapter of the UFT. Among his many other activities related to retirement issues, he is a member of the Standing Committee on Retirees of the AFT; a member of both the Task Force on Retirees and the Pension Committee of the New York State United Teachers; a member of the Committee on Aging of the New York City Central Labor Council; and a member of the National PreRetirement Education Association. In 1981, Mr. Aaronson was a delegate to the New York and White House Conferences on Aging. In 1995, he again served as a delegate to the New York Conference on Aging and an alternate delegate to the White House Conference. Mel is Chairman of the NCPERS Legislative Committee. In addition, he is a member of the Credentials, Elections, Program and Resolutions Committees.
