NCPERS 2002 Legislative Conference Washington, DC

What's on the Ways and Means Committee Agenda?
Kim Hildred, Staff Director, House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security

Kim Hildred stated that the chairman of the Social Security subcommittee, Rep. Clay Shaw (R-FL) is very committed to developing a bipartisan Social Security reform proposal that can pass Congress this year. He has introduced a bill, HR 3497, which he believes meets the criteria for reform established by President Bush and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD). Shaw’s subcommittee hopes to schedule hearings on the bill this year, and reach consensus on a bill that could pass this year.

Other issues of concern for Clay include protecting Social Security numbers from identity theft. He also will focus on the operation of the Social Security system, which will face increasing demands as baby boomers begin to retire.

Hildred encouraged NCPERS members to send their views to Rep. Shaw on his Social Security reform bill. She stressed in particular the need for feedback from public sector funds. Hildred also indicated that Rep. Shaw's subcommittee would not consider mandatory Social Security coverage of state and local government employees.
