President Delivers Annual Report
Elmer J. Khal delivered his final keynote address as NCPERS president at the opening session of the 63rdAnnual Conference in Anaheim, CA.
Recapping the last year, Khal noted the increasing emphasis NCPERS has placed on health care costs for public employees and retirees. He said the organization would continue seeking ways to help them cope with rising health care costs. He noted NCPERS has joined several coalitions since the last annual conference, to help with what he expects will be a continuing campaign to find a solution to this problem.
Khal also noted that at this conference NCPERS was introducing its new long-term care insurance plan. Responding to requests from many members, NCPERS developed the program so it would offer the widest possible coverage. Participants can obtain policies that cover spouses, children, parents and grandparents. Khal noted that NCPERS has a long history of offering similar programs. NCPERS’ life insurance, which began 34 years ago, now enrolls more than 100,000 participants.
In his concluding remarks Khal noted that NCPERS is more than a pension organization. “We are a legislative organization, and we will continue to maintain an active presence in Washington and on Capitol Hill to fulfill our organization’s mission.”
Khal’s career includes 34 years of service with the Cleveland Fire Department and 14 years as an elected trustee for the Ohio Police and Firemen's Disability and Pension Fund. He has been involved with NCPERS for 24 years. Khal will remain a board member for the next three years, serving as immediate past president.
