NCPERS Conference Speakers Debate Privatizing Social Security and California Pension Systems

NCPERS held its largest Legislative Conference in Washington, DC, February 8-9, at the Holiday Inn on Capitol Hill. More than 270 participants heard from Congressional and industry representatives about issues affecting public pension plans.

This year's speakers and panels focused much of their attention on the Bush Administration's proposals for privatizing the Social Security system. Another key topic was California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's plan to replace the current defined benefit government employee pension plan. Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of The Rothenberg Political Report , discussed the implications last year's elections have for the current Congress and for the next presidential election.

After the one-day briefing, participants headed to Capitol Hill for a congressional breakfast and meetings with their elected representatives.

If you couldn't come to this year's legislative conference, make your plans now to attend the 2006 NCPERS Legislative Conference on February 6-8 in Washington, DC, at the Holiday Inn on the Hill.
