Count on NCPERS for information, knowledge, education, and powerful advocacy to protect the financial security of the retirees who depend on you.

Annual Conference

When it comes to education, no other conference compares to the NCPERS Annual Conference. That's why more than 1,000 trustees, administrators, state and local officials, investment, financial and union officers, pension staff and regulators attend each year.

Attendees benefit from the comprehensive educational programming, dynamic speakers, and networking opportunities with money managers, investment service providers and public fund colleagues from across the nation.

In the current partisan political climate -- with public sector pensions the whipping-boy for state budget ills across the country -- it is more important than ever for pension trustees to speak with one voice in support of (a) their funds' performance, and (b) the importance of their funds as a model for the solution of the nation's worsening long-term retirement security problem. Attending the 2013 Annual Conference will help make your messages effective and consistent.

The future sustainability of state and local DB plans depends on systematic and adequate levels of funding - a task made far more difficult by recent changes to GASB accounting rules. Rich Harris -- Finance and Compliance Officer for the Denver Employees Retirement Plan and Vice Chair of the GFOA's Standing Committee on Retirement Benefits and Administration -- will provide critical information about those changes and new initiatives by national organizations to counter them. Harris will also provide helpful rules of thumb regarding DB plan sustainability.

Public pension funds continue to find themselves under unprecedented scrutiny -- and attack. Traditional notions of member rights to retirement benefits earned are being threatened in the court house as well as the state house. NCPERS Legal Advisor, Robert Klausner, will examine cutting edge battles in court houses throughout America, looking at which strategies have worked and which have failed as we explore solutions to the issues they represent.

How can a staff of just eight employees administer benefits for 18,000 active and retirement plan participants and 500 participating employer groups? The Arkansas Local Police and Fire Retirement System provides a premium level of service that way -- by taking advantage of the latest technology to reduce administrative costs and dramatically increase efficiency.  Executive Director, David B. Clark will share LOPFI's formula for improving retirement system administration through technology at the NCPERS 2013 Annual Conference.

GENERAL SESSION KEYNOTE SPEAKER (Click the video below)

Climate change is reshaping the planet -- and it's affecting much more than just the weather. In time, it promises to drastically alter the world's centers of economic power, turning today's long-term investment strategies on their heads. And that has profound implications for pension funds and the trustees responsible for their financial well-being.

One of the most important strategic thinkers of our time -- national security expert and bestselling author Dr. Thomas P.M. Barnett -- will speak at the NCPERS Annual Conference in Honolulu in May, explaining how climate change will remake every part of the globe and how those changes will determine where pensions should be investing their money in the coming decades. Dr. Barnett is in high demand within government circles as a forecaster of global conflict and an expert on the forces that are reshaping the planet.
