NCPERS 2007 Annual Legislative Conference a Success

Public fund trustees, administrators and officials from across the country convened in Washington, DC, February 5-7, to learn
about the federal legislative and regulatory issues expected to affect public plans in 2007. The conference kicked-off with a
keynote speech by former presidential advisor, political consultant and best-selling author, Paul Begala, who, between stories
of his adventures with business partner James Carville, discussed the new Congress and the importance of advocacy and educating
government officials on pension issues. Other speakers at the conference included Bill Bortz, Associate Benefits Tax Counsel at
the Department of the Treasury; Congressional staffers Michelle Varnhagen and Judy Miller, of the House Education and Labor
Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, respectively; and Terry Mumford, partner with Ice Miller, Al Campos, a lobbyist with
the National Education Association, and Thomas J. Mackell, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of

Public Employee Forum on GASB Statement 45
After the Annual Legislative Conference, NCPERS joined the International Association of Fire Fighters and the American Federation
of Teachers in presenting a half-day forum on GASB Statement 45 and its implications for public sector pension funds and local
