Over the past year, California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) has added talent to its investment office as they focus on active and alternative investment strategies to build a resilient and innovative fund.

California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) recently announced structural and leadership changes to its private market investments program, consolidating its Growth & Innovation program with the Private Equity asset class. Over the past year, California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) has added talent to its investment office as they focus on active and alternative investment strategies to build a resilient and innovative fund.

Nicole Musicco was named chief investment officer in February 2022. Prior to joining CalPERS, Nicole was a partner at RedBird Capital Partners where she led the firm's Canadian investment business. She also previously managed the private markets investment program at the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO). Nicole's experience includes 16 years with the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan where she led the public equity investment team and oversaw the private equity fund and co-investment program.

Anton Orlich was named managing investment director (MID) for Growth & Innovation. The newly created position is responsible for developing strategies and investment deals focused on higher growth, higher risk and reward opportunities. These include, but are not limited to: growth equity and opportunities that do not fit within traditional asset classes. As the MID for Growth & Innovation, Orlich will be a part of the Investment Office Executive Team, which is responsible for overall investment performance and risk management for the portfolio.

Peter Cashion was named MID for Sustainable Investments. Cashion's role is to set the vision, strategy, and governance for CalPERS' sustainability work and be responsible for leading all aspects of the fund's efforts to develop and implement an economics-based ESG research and data framework to support ESG integration into the investment decision-making process. The CalPERS Sustainable Investing program works closely with each asset class to manage investment risks, and uncover investment opportunities through the sustainable investment lens, while ensuring that ESG factors are integrated into investment strategies, analyses, and decisions. These efforts are designed to enhance the long-term sustainability and resiliency of the Total Fund.
