At NCPERS, we connect and empower public pension leaders with actionable data they can use today. We conduct two research studies every year to aid in benchmarking and performance evaluation: The Public Pension Compensation Survey compares compensation and benefits packages across the industry, while the Public Retirement Systems Study tracks fiscal, operational, and business practices.
Annual Public Retirement Systems Study
Since 2011, our Annual Public Retirement Systems Study has tracked trends in fiscal, operational, and business practices—providing a clear, longitudinal view of how plans plans perform and evolve. The study serves as a key industry resource, featuring valuable data on fund expenses, asset allocation, funding levels, and more.
In addition to the report, the accompanying member-only interactive dashboard allows users to filter data by plan size, employee type, and other datapoints to compare their own performance and practices against peers.
Plans that participate in the study are recognized with the Certificate of Excellence for Public Pension Reporting and Transparency for furthering open disclosure, increasing the range of data from which to learn from, and contributing to the public’s understanding of public retirement systems.

Public Pension Compensation Survey
NCPERS developed the annual Public Pension Compensation Survey to help pension funds benchmark compensation and benefits packages against their peers and ensure key positions are filled with skilled and qualified staff.
Conducted in the spring in partnership with CBIZ, this survey captures compensation, bonus structures, and benefits for 90 positions commonly found at public pension funds — plus oversight responsibilities and salary‑planning insights. Participating funds receive complimentary access to survey results.
The results of each survey are presented in a detailed report and an interactive dashboard so HR leaders and executives can benchmark with confidence. The dashboard enables organizations to filter the data in several ways—such as region, number of fund staff, or assets under management—to help optimize the mix of funds to which they would like to compare themselves.
